An industrial infrastructure of the size of the Rizziconi combined-cycle power plant needs to create a relationship with the area where it is located. If properly managed, this relationship can be positive and useful in a number of ways.
The implementation of the plant on the Gioia Tauro Plain was an opportunity both to increase employment and to retrain the local labour force.
During the construction phase, which lasted just over 27 months, the site employed about 300 people, mostly in construction-related jobs, with peaks of 800 people.
In the current phase of managing the plant, Rizziconi Energia has taken on more than 30 direct employees, while another 60 persons are employed in services related to the plant.
The company has also signed a Memorandum of Understanding with the municipality of Rizziconi which provides for a range of benefits for the local community. These include the setting up of a special investment fund in the municipality for the financing of “environmental” projects, the enhancement of the historical, artistic and cultural heritage and the construction and embellishment of educational, sports, logistical, and institutional structures.
The Memorandum of Understanding also includes the supply of free electricity for 15 years for public street lighting, schools, the municipal hall and the cemetery. Finally, Rizziconi Energia has designed and co-financed the construction of two photovoltaic power plants rated at 6kW each, one situated on the municipal hall and the other on the high school.
